Stripping Cichlid fry/eggs

Writer: Chris GelardiChris Gelardi

Stripping" is a technique used to remove the eggs or fry from the female African cichlid's mouth. This is typically done when the female is holding the eggs or fry in her mouth and you want to separate them to increase the chances of survival or to raise them separately.

Here are the general steps to strip African cichlid fry:

  1. Determine when the female is holding eggs or fry in her mouth: Some African cichlids are mouthbrooders, meaning the female will hold the fertilized eggs or fry in her mouth until they are ready to hatch or are large enough to be released. Watch the female for signs that she is holding eggs or fry, such as a swollen or protruding mouth.

  2. Catch the female and immobilize her: Catch the female using a net and gently hold her in a towel or other soft cloth. African cichlids can be very sensitive to stress, so it's important to handle them gently to minimize stress and injury.

  3. Open the female's mouth: Use a small tool such as tweezers or forceps to gently open the female's mouth. Be very careful not to harm the female or the eggs/fry inside her mouth.

  4. Remove the eggs/fry: Use a gentle squeezing motion to release the eggs or fry from the female's mouth. It's important to be very gentle and avoid squeezing too hard or causing injury to the female.

  5. Transfer the eggs/fry to a safe container: Once the eggs or fry have been removed from the female's mouth, transfer them to a separate container filled with clean water. It's important to maintain the proper water parameters and temperature for the specific species of cichlid you are breeding.

Stripping African cichlid fry should be done with caution and only when necessary, as it can be stressful for the female and may reduce the chances of successful breeding in the future. If possible, it's best to let the female care for the eggs and fry naturally, as this can help to promote natural behaviors and increase the chances of survival.
